What are our goals?

We are focusing on homelessness & housing and health & safety because they are relevant topics of concern to Seattle today. Although technology may not necessarily solve these issues, it can be leveraged to mitigate their symptoms and address their causes.

Social sector organizations are doing important work to address social issues and technology can support the work they do. We want to create impactful technology and spread the idea that we can all make a difference. As a student, not only are you able to make an impact but you can gain valuable skills in the process. This event is an opportunity for students to:

Develop technical skills while contributing to meaningful projects
Gain insight into the challenges faced by local Seattle communities
Identify the role technology can have in addressing social issues
Collaborate with like-minded students who want to make an impact
Access resources such as mentorship and networking opportunities that will be provided to support projects after the event

What to expect?

RESEARCH
Our student research group is gathering information from social sector organizations across Seattle to learn about their work and the challenges they face. This research will be available at the event so you can learn about and understand the intricacies of the issues we hope to tackle.

RESOURCES
To maximize the potential impact of your ideas and solutions, there will be mentors, speakers and judges from Vulcan, Microsoft, Cisco, NEO Tracker, Giving Tech Labs and DemocracyLab. You will also have the chance to network with recruiters and eat free food, collect cool swag, all while bringing about change!

JUDGING
Because the problems we are tackling are complex and require diverse perspectives and skillsets, project judging will be centered around three equally-weighted categories:
‍Idea: The solution to the problem and its relevance to homelessness and housing and/or health and safety.
Impact plan: Feasibility of solution and potential for impact. You can think of this like a business plan to maximize impact rather than profit.
Prototype: A rough technical implementation of your solution.
